The first Jane Jacobs walk in North Beach (as far as we know) will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014. It starts at the Firemen statue in Washington Square Park, near the corner of Columbus Ave and Filbert St. Map and more details at Jane Jacobs Walks. After the walk feel free to meet at Rogue Ales patio to continue the conversation.
North Beach folks are invited to meet for no-host food and drink at Rogue Ales patio beginning at noon, Saturday May 31. Talk about the latest developments in the neighborhood with friends and residents. We'll have a brief review of No Dig activities over the past year and a summary of the federal suit against Muni if it's finalized by then.
Friday, March 21, 2014: THD presents Rebels with a Cause
Friday, March 21st, the film "REBELS WITH A CAUSE" will be screened at Canessa Gallery. Join us for this exciting story that spotlights a battle over land that changed the American landscape forever.
REBELS WITH A CAUSE is the story of a regional California effort that grew into an astonishing system of fourteen National Seashores - the result of garden clubs, ranchers, farmers, conservationists, politicians from both parties, widows, and volunteers working together through compromise and negotiation, with the American public coming up as the winner.
It's a fascinating example of a hard fought campaign to preserve something important to all of us - our public land. And it is a powerful tool to illustrate that the personal is political, and the local is global. REBELS is a feel-good cinematic experience that conveys an inspiring truth about how ordinary individuals have the power to change the rules.
Documentary filmmakers are notoriously strapped for cash. They are generally doing what they love but without a huge movie studio financially backing them during this oftentimes long journey of movie creation.
Canessa Gallery and Telegraph Hill Dwellers (THD) Art & Culture Committee are hoping to help. 100% of the proceeds from this event will be donated to filmmakers Nancy Kelly and Kenji Yamamoto, who will be at Canessa to introduce the film.
- When: Friday, March 21st, 2014 Doors open 6:45, film starts at 7:30.
- Where: Canessa Gallery 708 Montgomery at Washington & Columbus, 2nd Floor (above Bocadillos restaurant)
- Cost: Tickets are a $20 donation. Donate $100 or more and receive a complimentary copy of the Rebels DVD.
- Reservations a must due to limited seating.

- Email canessagllr@gmail.com with name and number in party.

Saturday, May 18 10 a.m.: Mayor's Town Hall on the SF Budget, with David Chiu & Mark Farrell
General information and schedule of town halls
Sample of Materials from Budget Townhall These are for Districts 8 & 9, but pages 2–4 are common to all districts.
- The Sample of Materials shows a whopping $487.2 million SF budget shortfall by 2018.
- The Central Subway is expected to have a $400 million deficit by 2018. (How does this affect the above figure?)
- Muni is expecting huge annual shortfalls for the next 20 years.
- Given this overspending how can Muni justify spending $70 million on the unneeded Pagoda Option?
Come and ask these tough questions of our Supervisor, the Mayor, and Mark Farrell, Board of Supervisors Budget Chair.
- Districts 2 & 3 with Supervisors Mark Farrell & David Chiu
- Saturday, May 18, 2013 (10 – 11:30 a.m.)
- Galileo Academy, 1150 Francisco St @ Van Ness Avenue
