MTA Projects --- Summer Columbus Ave shutdown & holiday construction noise

Mid-June 2014

 2014-15 MTA Schedule

TBM extract — Tunnel boring machine extraction at Pagoda site and follow-on site cleanup. Official MTA schedule here, page 2.

Columbus — Columbus Avenue sidewalk widening between Union and Filbert. MTA announcement here.

Street work — Water pipe installation and roadway work. MTA announcement here, see Planned construction (Columbus and Union).

Note:

  • The TBM extraction project will be on break from mid-July through mid-October and then resume work all through the holidays. North Beach had construction work during the 2013 holiday season, 6 a.m. thru 11 p.m. Monday thru Saturday. Is this going to happen again this year? Easy fix — finish the work mid-July through mid-October. (Sounds like there is another motivation to delay completion of the TBM extraction, perhaps to avoid revealing the project's obvious cost overrun until after the November election with a $500 million Muni support bond on the ballot.)
  • Columbus street widening will keep open only one lane in each direction and is being done at the North Beach's busiest economic time of year. Easy fix — do this work next winter when traffic blockages will be less disruptive.
  • As if there weren't enough going on in that block of Columbus — Water pipe and roadway work will continue after the Columbus street widening to continue the summer traffic blockages.
